On Belarus' participation in the UNECE webinar on smart sustainable cities profile

28.05.2020

On 27 May 2020, the secretariat of UNECE organized a virtual round table “Sustainable smart city profile”. Representatives of line ministries and their subordinate organizations, as well as of city administrations from Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan took part in the event. The Belarusian side was represented at the level of representatives of the Ministry of Architecture, the leadership of Grodno regional and city executive committees, as well as experts from the Institute of Housing — NIPTIS named after Atayev S.S.

At the virtual round table, participants discussed the issues on compilation of a profile of a smart city, on necessary for that indicators and data. Participants shared best practices on the implementation of projects and initiatives of smart sustainable cities. The UNECE Land and Housing Division is currently developing profiles for the cities of Grodno (Belarus), Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan) and Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan). Based on the discussions, the secretariat will develop practical Recommendations to local governments on the assessment of actions taken and the implementation of priority projects of the smart city. The results of the webinar will also be presented during the 2020 Forum of Mayors, which is scheduled for 6 October 2020 in Geneva.

Belarus actively uses the UNECE toolkit on urban issues and the introduction of the concept of smart sustainable city. In particular, in October 2019, together with the Commission Belarus developed a National Profile of the Housing, Urban Development and Land Management. The recommendations of the Profile will be used by the Belarusian side during the implementation of the pilot project for the construction of a residential complex in Grodno using energy-saving and environmentally friendly technologies.
