On the participation of Belarus' delegation in the 8th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the UNECE Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes

On 9-12 October 2018, the 8th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the UNECE Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes took place in Astana (Kazakhstan). Belarus was represented by Mr. Andrei Khmel, the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of Belarus, and Ms. Tatiana Slizh, the Head of the Department for the Use and Protection of Water Resources of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection.

A number of issues related to cooperation in the field of transboundary waters, including the benefits of transboundary cooperation, the nexus water-food-energy-ecosystem, adaptation to climate change, disaster risk reduction and industrial safety were considered at the session. The Meeting adopted the Strategy for the implementation of the Water Convention at the global level, as well as Convention’s Work Plan on for the period 2019 — 2021.

During the seminar devoted to financing the development of transboundary basins, the delegation of Belarus presented a report on various sources of funding for activities carried out by the Republic of Belarus in the Dnieper River Basin.

At the side event on national water policy dialogues, the delegation of Belarus presented report on strategic planning of water resources management and the development of methodologies for achieving SDG No. 6. Participant were also briefed on the implementation of the international technical assistance project “EU Water Initiative plus for the Eastern Partnership countries”.
