The delegation of Belarus takes part in the Conference of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions

The delegation of the Republic of Belarus, represented by the Permanent Mission of Belarus to the UN in Geneva and the Institute for Environmental Management of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Belarus, takes part in the biennial conference of the parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm environmental conventions, which takes place in Geneva from 29 April  to 10 May 2019.

For reference: Belarus is a party to the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. Belarus is an observer in the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade.

The common theme of the conference is “Clean Planet, Healthy People: Rational Use of Chemicals and Wastes”. During the 2-weeks period, the conference will address a number of important issues aimed at ensuring environmental safe management of hazardous substances and wastes, preventing environmental pollution and negative impact on human health as well as the development of guidelines on best available techniques and best environmental practices and technical guidelines for the management of wastes consisting of or contaminated with POPs, as well as low concentrations of POPs in waste for environmentally sound management objectives.

The delegation of the Republic of Belarus will also participate in the discussion on issues that are relevant to all conventions, including technical assistance, synergies and coordination, well as compliance mechanisms and procedures.
