Belarus participates in the WHO Executive Committee’s special session

24.11.2017

On November 22-23, a special session of the Executive Committee of the World Health Organization is held in Geneva to discuss the draft Thirteenth General Program of Work of the WHO for 2019-2023 (GPW-13).

WHO’s General Program of Work for a five-year period is the Organization’s key strategic document that sets forth its goals, objectives, priorities and areas of work for the forthcoming five years. Negotiations on the draft will be held in Geneva from January to May 2018. The GPW-13 is supposed to be endorsed by the World Health Assembly in May 2018. At the special session, the delegations discuss the initial draft prepared by the WHO secretariat.

The Republic of Belarus takes part in the special session as an observer. Vadim Pisarevich, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva, made a statement in a general discussion. In his statement the representative of the Belarusian delegation welcomed the alignment of WHO's main priorities with the 2030 UN Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Organization's greater focus on achieving concrete results in its Member States. He further suggested that the WHO secretariat amend the draft by more adequately reflecting health-related interests of middle-income countries, in particular, WHO's planned cooperation with them through political dialogue and technical assistance.
