Belarus delegation participates in the 61st series of Assemblies of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)

The Belarusian delegation headed by H.E. Mr. Alexander Shumilin, Chairperson of the State Committee for Science and Technology (the SCST), participates in the annual session of the WIPO Assemblies (21 – 25 September 2020, in a hybrid mode).

The delegation includes H.E. Mr. Yury Ambrazevich, Permanent Representative of Belarus in Geneva, Mr. Vladimir Ryabovolov, Director General of the National Center of Intellectual Property, as well as representatives of the SCST, NCIP and the Permanent Mission of Belarus in Geneva.

The agenda of the meetings includes issues on the implementation and protection of intellectual property rights, including copyright and related rights, patents, trademarks, industrial designs, and geographical indications.

In his welcoming address to the participants on 21 September 2020 during the opening segment, Mr. Alexander Shumilin thanked WIPO Director General Francis Gurry for fruitful cooperation with Belarus over the past years. The head of the Belarusian delegation welcomed the appointment of Mr. Daren Tan as the new Director-General of the Organization from 1 October 2020, and expressed confidence for continued practical cooperation between the Government of Belarus and WIPO.

Alexander Shumilin informed about the specific results of work aimed to improve the national intellectual property system of Belarus, including on the preparation of the draft National Strategy of Belarus in the field of intellectual property until 2030, on Belarus accession from 22 October 2020 to the WIPO Marrakesh Treaty, as well as on the work to join WIPO Hague System for Registration of Industrial Designs. The Chairperson of the SCST also confirmed readiness to hold in Minsk a WIPO diplomatic conference on conclusion of the Design Law Treaty.
