On Belarus’ participation in the session of WIPO Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore

On 10 – 14 December 2018, the 38th session of the WIPO Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore took place at the headquarters of the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva.

 Representatives from 80 WIPO member States as well as international organizations participated in the session. The Belarusian delegation at the Committee included Mr. Artur Akhramenko, Head of the International Cooperation Division of the National Center of Intellectual Property, and representatives of Belarus Permanent Mission in Geneva. 

During the session, a number of issues that are of interest for Belarus were considered, including those related to ensuring effective legal protection of traditional knowledge, traditional cultural expressions and genetic resources. The Belarusian delegation took active participation in consultations on the economic consequences of administrative delays in patent filing and issuance, as well as on the development of measures which are aimed at preventing erroneous issuance of patents and ensuring compliance within the framework of the systems of joint use of the benefits resulted from implementation of the intellectual property rights.

At the site of the Committee, the Belarusian delegation met with the representatives of WIPO Department of Transition Economies and Developed Countries, during which the side agreed on the plan of joint activities with WIPO for the year of 2019, including on holding in Minsk
a subregional seminar “Economic Value of Intellectual Property”, national seminars on the Hague Registration System for Industrial Designs and on WIPO’s Global IP services, as well as the educational seminar for employees of the NCIP on establishing a center for mediation in the field of IP.
