On the address of the delegation of the Republic of Belarus to the United Nations Conference on Disarmament in connection with the 75th anniversary of the Khatyn tragedy

20.03.2018

On March 20, 2018, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva Yury Ambrazevich addressed the United Nations Conference on Disarmament on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Khatyn tragedy.

In his speech the diplomat has pointed out that the Belarusian side notes with regret, deep concern and anxiety the highest level of mistrust in recent years and the continuing increase in hostility between those states considered to be the most important participants in the international security system and which possess the overwhelming part of the entire military potential of the planet. The Belarusian side has noted as well the growing confrontational rhetoric, the growth of military spending and the escalation of conflicts .

Yury Ambrazevich recalled that the Khatyn tragedy had become a symbol of the horror and suffering of civilians for several generations of Belarusian people and people now living in the countries formed after the collapse of the USSR. He expressed the hope that historical memory will prevent from crossing the line behind which irreversible consequences for the existing civilization lie.

Noting the important role of the UN Conference on Disarmament in the process of ensuring and preserving peace during the Cold War the Permanent Representative of Belarus called upon the international community to make maximum use of the Conference opportunities as a platform for reducing tensions and building confidence.
