On the meeting of Mr. Andrei Dapkiunas, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, with Mr. Yi Xiaozhun, Deputy Director-General of the WTO, and Mr. Zhang Xiangchen, Permanent Representative of China to the WTO

On 25 February 2019 in Geneva Mr. Andrei Dapkiunas, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Mr. Yi Xiaozhun, Deputy Director-General of the WTO, and Mr. Zhang Xiangchen, Permanent Representative of China to the WTO.

During the concerned conversation Mr. Yi Xiaozhun stressed that the WTO Secretariat will continue providing Belarus with effective support in building national capacity for future work with the Organization. The priority is given primarily to the needs of the government in terms of training its specialists on issues falling under competence of the WTO. According to the WTO, in 2017 38 Belarusian experts took part in various WTO courses and seminars, while in 2018 this number has increased to 83.

The representative of China to the WTO, Mr. Zhang Xiangchen, expressed the official Beijing’s full support of Belarus’ efforts to join the WTO. He shared China’s vision of current WTO reform negotiations and expressed confidence that, after accepting such changes, the WTO would retain its relevance and effectiveness as foreign trade regulator, including in the sphere of  Members’ interests protection.

Mr. Andrei Dapkiunas thanked the interlocutors for their support. He expressed his conviction that maintenance of effective international regulation of economic foundation is vital for the entire international community, both for public institutions and private business, given the degradation of international law the system in the areas of peace and security.
