Presentation of a book on the history of the International Red Cross Movement in Belarus

On December 12, 2019, a presentation of the book “Mission of Mercy” by Vladimir Likhodedov was organized in Geneva for the participants of the 33rd International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent.

 

The book was published in May 2019 in Minsk with the support of the Belarus Red Cross Society (BRCS) and the Ministry of Information of the Republic of Belarus.

The author has collected unique visual material on the activities of the International Red Cross Movement in Belarus from the end of the 19th century to 1939, which was included in the publication.

Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva H.E. Mr. Yury Ambrazevich, Secretary General of the Belarusian Red Cross Society Ms. Olga Mychko, Secretary of the Commission for the Implementation of International Humanitarian Law under the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus Mr. Alexander Basalyga and Head of Unit Library and Public Archives, Archives and Information Management Division, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Mr. Guy Alexander Thomas addressed the audience.

Panelists emphasized the importance of maintaining and preserving the historical memory of the activities of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, youth education, as well as the dissemination of knowledge to a broad audience. Need for partnerships were particularly emphasized as a tool of strengthening humanitarian cooperation and protecting the most vulnerable groups of people.

A copy of the book “Mission of Mercy” was solemnly donated to the Library of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
