25.02.2020

On February 24, 2020, the High-Level Segment of the UN Conference on Disarmament began its work in Geneva – a format for political discussion on the issues within the mandate of the Conference, annually bringing together dozens of foreign ministers and other high representatives.

H.E. Mr. Yury Ambrazevich, Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva, represented the Republic of Belarus in the High-level segment.

The Belarusian diplomat emphasized in his statement the depth of the crisis of the international security system that the world community has faced in recent years. He called on the participants to revive the work of the Conference to develop response to modern threats and challenges.

Y.Ambrazevich formulated the approaches of the Republic of Belarus to possible areas of work of the Conference on responding to the growing threat of malicious use of the new achievements in the field of science and technology.

The audience was informed about the results of the High-Level International Conference held in Minsk in 2019, as well as about the Belarusian initiatives on the drafting and adoption of a declaration on the non-deployment of intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles in Europe and on the adoption of a UNGA resolution banning the development and production of new types of weapons of mass destruction and new systems of such weapons.
