On the participation of the delegation of Belarus in the 12th meeting of the High Contracting Parties to the Protocol V to the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons on the Elimination of Explosive Remnants of War

On November 19, 2018 the Belarusian delegation took part in the 12th meeting of the High Contracting Parties to the Protocol V to the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons on the Elimination of Explosive Remnants of War, which took place in Geneva.

The representatives of 70 foreign countries took part in the work of the conference. The Belarusian delegation included representatives of the Ministry of Defense and the Permanent Mission of Belarus in Geneva.

The head of Belarusian Delegation Yury Ambrazevich, Permanent Representative of Belarus to the United Nations Office in Geneva, as a vice-president of the meeting, has also chaired a final plenary session.

The participating States reviewed and adopted the final document with a set of measures to improve the efficiency of clearance of territories from explosive remnants of war, victim assistance and improving the system of technical assistance. Taking into account the remaining importance of the subject of the Protocol V for Belarus, Colonel Andrei Kurakov, the Head of the Engineering Troops of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus, has presented a national report to the participants of the meeting.

The representative of the Ministry of Defense informed about the system of clearance of territories from explosive remnants of war in the Republic of Belarus. Only in 2018, 34,337 explosive objects were discovered and neutralized by demining units of the Engineering Troops of the Ministry of Defense. Since 1944, more than 27.6 million explosive items remaining after the First and Second World Wars have been found and destroyed in Belarus.

In 2019 Belarus will continue to actively participate in the work of the instruments of the Protocol 5 to the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons which is aiming, among other things, at the improvement, development and strengthening of the national system of clearance of territories from explosive remnants of war.
