On the participation of Belarus in the 11th session of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV)

On 29 October – 2 November 2018, the regular Sessions of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) took place in Geneva.

The delegation of Belarus was headed by Mr. Vladimir Beynya, the Director of the State Inspectorate for Testing and Protection of Plant Varieties at the Ministry of Agriculture and Foodstuffs of Belarus.

The Belarusian delegation took an active participation in the discussions of agenda items and adoption of documents related to  plant variety protection, the use of DNA markers for seeds, as well as methodological recommendations for conducting tests on “distinguishability, uniformity, and stability”.

At the UPOV Sessions, with the support of the Belarus delegation, it was decided to approve the availability of the Russian interpretation during the subsequent Sessions. This decision will expand the opportunities for Russian-speaking breeders and variety testers to participate in the work of UPOV and access to documentation of the above international organization.

Under the auspices of the event, the Belarusian delegation also held meetings with the delegations of Russia, Moldova, Canada and the Netherlands, during which the sides discussed areas for expanding bilateral cooperation in the field of plant variety protection.
