26.04.2019

On April 26, 2019, at the initiative of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Belarus in Geneva and the UNDP Office in Geneva, an event to commemorate the International Chernobyl Remembrance Day was held on the premises of the Mission of Belarus.

For reference: The International Chernobyl Remembrance Day was established by UN General Assembly Resolution 71/125 “Persistent legacy of the Chernobyl disaster” (December 2016) and is commemorated on 26 April.

The event was attended by the delegations of Belarus, Russia (at the level of Permanent Representative), Ukraine (at the level of Permanent Representative), the European Union, as well as a number of interested international agencies — UNDP, WHO, OCHA, ICRC, UNEP, World Bank, FAO, IAEA.

The meeting featured an exchange of information on the current relevant activities, as well as a discussion on the content of a draft General Assembly resolution on Chernobyl, which will be considered in the fall of 2019 in New York.

The Belarusian delegation focused on the need to reflect in the draft resolution as a matter of priority such issues as the continuing international assistance to the affected states with the view to promoting sustainable development of the disaster-affected regions.
