05.10.2016

On October 5, 2016 the Permanent Representative of Belarus Mr. Yury Ambrazevich participated in the 67th session of the Executive Committee of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

In his statement, Yury Ambrazevich expressed support for the strategic directions and priorities identified in the report of the High Commissioner Filippo Grandi. He stressed the importance of maintaining UNHCR's mandate depoliticized and urged to continue efforts aimed at enhancing national capacities in the field of refugee management.

The Permanent Representative of Belarus underscored that for two recent years Belarus has been facing a wave of inflow of Ukrainian citizens as a result of the crisis in the south-east of this country. He noted that Belarus over that period received “without the hype” more than 160 thousand Ukrainians, which per capita ratio brings Belarus among the leaders accepting forced migrants.

The Belarusian diplomat further stressed the importance of effective support of the UNHCR to the Governments concerned. He welcomed the contribution of the UNHCR experts to further improvement of the Belarusian legislation on asylum and also announced the intention of Belarus to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the issue of Belarus' accession to the UN Statelessness Convention and expressed hope for the continued UNHCR technical and expert support.
