On the participation of the Belarusian delegation in the meeting of the Working Group of the Parties to the Aarhus Convention

19 — 21June 2018, the 22nd meeting of the Working Group of the Parties to the Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (the Aarhus Convention), which was organized under the auspices of the UNECE took place in Geneva.

The delegation of Belarus included representatives of the Permanent Mission to the UN Office in Geneva, as well as Ms. Olga Zakharova, the Head of the Belarusian Aarhus Center, who presented a report on effective public participation in the adoption of international decisions on chemicals and wastes.

During the thematic section on access to information, Ms. Olga Zakharova informed the participants of the Working Group on the steps by the Republic of Belarus to establish a single national portal on environmental information.

During the meeting, a number of important issues for Belarus were considered including the compliance mechanism of the Aarhus Convention, the reporting mechanism under the treaty. A separate session was devoted to the issues on accession to the Convention of countries outside the UNECE region.

Furthermore, a special segment dedicated to the 20th anniversary of adoption of the Aarhus Convention was held during meeting and addressed issues of youth involvement in the implementation of the Convention, the practice by Member states in transferring experience and knowledge to implement the provisions of the treaty.
