On participation in the 108th session of the IOM Council

From 28 November to 1 December 2017 Geneva has been hosting the 108th session of the Council of the International Organization for Migration. The delegation of Belarus composed of the representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Permanent Mission of Belarus to the UN in Geneva is taking part in the session.

His Excellency Yury Ambrazevich, the Head of the delegation of Belarus and Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva delivered a statement in the general debate on 28 November.

In his statement, the Permanent Representative of Belarus has pointed to the important role played by the IOM in addressing the problem of irregular migration around the world, and welcomed the work that is currently under in the UN system to develop a global compact on migration. He further focused on the need to address the root causes behind the surge in forced displacement wordwide, above all, wars and conflicts, which mainly arise owing to disagreements between major states. In this regard, Yury Ambrazevich spoke in favor of finding new mechanisms for positive engagement of great powers, and stated Belarus’ willingness to provide a venue for dialogue. He noted that the above point constituted the gist of the message delivered by the President of the Republic of Belarus at the latest session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.
