On the work of the subsidiary body 5 of the UN Conference on Disarmament under the leadership of the Permanent Representative of Belarus

The subsidiary body 5 of the United Nations Conference on Disarmament continues its work under the coordination of the Permanent Representative of Belarus to the United Nations Office in Geneva Yury Ambrazevich.

On June 19-21, 2018, in-depth discussions on assessing threats to international peace and security related to the development of science and technology; cyber-security and the problems of weaponization of artificial intelligence; countering the obtaining and use of weapons of mass destruction by non-state actors; as well as on a comprehensive program of disarmament and transparency in armaments were held.

As a result of the effective partnership of the Belarusian mission — coordinator of the subsidiary body 5 and the Secretariat of the United Nations Conference on Disarmament, a wide range of expert opinions on the issues under consideration was presented to the Members of the Conference.

Representatives of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995, the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), the Geneva Center for Security Policy, the King’s College of London, the Preparatory Commission of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization took part in the discussions as panelists.

The in-depth discussion on new challenges and threats within the subsidiary body 5 aims to facilitate the revitalization and resumption of the substantive work of the Conference.
