Belarusian delegation takes part at the 70th session of the World Health Assembly

From the 22nd to the 31st May 2017 the delegation of the Republic of Belarus headed by the Minister of Health of the Republic of Belarus V.Malashko takes part at the 70th session of the World Health Assembly (WHA).

The session addresses issues of contemporary challenges in public health, the fight against infectious and noncommunicable diseases, and the improvement of health systems that will contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

V.Malashko addressed the WHA plenary session with a report on the theme of the general discussion “Building Better Systems for Health in the Age of Sustainable Development”.

The Head of the Belarusian delegation held bilateral meetings with candidates for the post of WHO Director-General from Ethiopia (Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus) and Pakistan (Sania Nishtar).

On May 23, 2017 the Ethiopian citizen Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was elected as the new Director-General of the World Health Organization (assuming office on July 1, 2017). After the elections V. Malashko had a separate meeting with the Director General Elect on the ways of cooperation and a possible visit of the Director-General of WHO to Belarus.

During the 70th WHA session V. Malashko also met with its Chairman, the Minister of Health of Russia V. Skvortsova, as well as the UNAIDS Executive Director M. Sidibe on the issues of expanding further cooperation.

Within the framework of the meeting with the WHO Assistant Director-General O.Chestnov and the Director of the WHO Regional Office for Europe Zhuzhanna Zhakab the project on cancer screening in the Republic of Belarus was discussed, which is implemented with the financial support of WHO.

During the bilateral meetings with the Ministers of Health of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Georgia, Latvia, Armenia, Poland, Syria, Qatar, Iraq the issues of supplies of Belarusian drugs on the markets of these countries were discussed. The issues of providing high-tech medical assistance to foreign citizens in the Belarusian health institutions, foreign students education and training of foreign specialists in the Belarusian medical institutions of higher education were also on the agenda.
