26.02.2020On February 26, 2020, the Belarusian delegation took part in the discussion in the general segment of the 43rd session of the UN Human Rights Council which takes place in Geneva from February 24 to March 20.
The Permanent Representative of Belarus Yury Ambrazevich emphasized in his speech the timeliness of the call to action formulated to the UN Human Rights Council by the UN Secretary General at the opening of the current session on February 24.
Assessing the current situation in the Council as inconsistent with his status as a “forum for an international dialogue of cooperation for development and all human rights without exception,” the Belarusian representative has spoken out for the need to revise the Council’s priority scale and the need to seriously change the current model of the Council’s activities.
According to the Belarusian side, the Council could become a truly active body only if a unifying agenda is found. Joint efforts of all partners whether states, international organizations and the non-governmental sector to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals could and should be as such an agenda for the UN Human Rights Council and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, as emphasized by Yury Ambrazevich.
