On the participation of Mr. Yury Ambrazevich, Permanent Representative Belarus in Geneva, in the WTO Public Forum

On 8 October 2019 H.E. Mr. Yury Ambrazevich, Permanent Representative of Belarus in Geneva, addressed the participants of the 14th annual Public Forum of the World Trade Organization in Geneva.

Background: 2019 WTO Public Forum under the topic “Trading Forward: Adapting to a Changing World”, brought together over 1500 representatives of governments, parliaments, international organizations, civil society, academia and business. The aim of the event is to provide platform to exchange views on development of various aspects of international trade.

During a special event “On the road to Nur-Sultan: Eurasian perspectives on the future of the multilateral trading system”, which was held on the sidelines of the Forum, Mr. Yury Ambrazevich pointed out the obvious linkage between the existing degradation of different elements of the system of international relations in the field of peace and security, and the crisis in global economy and particularly in multilateral trading system, which has been growing in recent years.

In this context, the diplomat drew attention to Belarus' international initiative on resumption of a comprehensive global dialogue on security issues and expressed confidence that it must include the component of economic security issues, aiming at creation of predictable and generally recognized rules of international trade.

Commenting on the current and prospective contribution of the Eurasian Economic Union to the multilateral trading system, the Permanent Representative of Belarus has underlined the readiness of the EAEU to develop direct contacts with other integrations, which was repeatedly sounded at the political level. He stressed that in the long term prospective Belarus has interest in implementation of the “integration of integrations” concept, which implies rapprochement, harmonization and interpenetration of regional and sub-regional economic unions.

The Permanent Representative of Belarus reconfirmed the strategic interest of Belarus in the WTO accession and expressed the hope that efficient and mutually beneficial collaboration of all negotiating partners will allow to announce the conclusion of these negotiations at the 12th Ministerial Conference of the WTO in Nur-Sultan in June 2020.
