24.02.2021

On February 24, 2021, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus H.E. Mr. Vladimir Makei made a statement in the High-level segment of the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, held in a virtual format.

Vladimir Makei urged the meeting participants to grasp the true profundity of the security crisis that the international community has faced in recent years.

The Belarusian representative stressed that amid a security crisis, turbulence and deepening contradictions between key world players, the disarmament agenda is of paramount importance for the entire international community. In this regard, the extension by Russia and the United States of the New START Treaty marks the resumption of constructive interaction aimed at strengthening the existing disarmament mechanisms.

Vladimir Makei informed the Conference on the initiatives of the Republic of Belarus to develop a multilateral political declaration on the non-deployment of intermediate and shorter-range missiles in order to fill the legal vacuum that emerged after the termination of the INF Treaty, as well as on the creation of a " belt of digital good neighborliness" with the aim of reducing the risks of confrontation in cyberspace.
