International Mother Language Day

20.02.2023

On February 21, the countries of the world celebrate International Mother Language Day, established by UNESCO General Conference in November 1999.

For Belarusians, the native language is one of the important components of the nation's cultural code and patriotic education. It acts not only as a means of communication and the main element of culture, but is also a symbol of national identity, basis of identification, historical memory.

On this day, on the basis of the Central Scientific Library named after Yakub Kolas of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the Republican dictation in the Belarusian language is held. Through the Zoom platform, it is possible to participate in writing a dictation on a nationwide scale. The live broadcast is carried out by the channel “Culture” of the Belarusian radio. The main goal of the dictation is to show solidarity, demonstrate love and respect for the Belarusian language, draw attention to its beauty, feel the taste and energy of the Belarusian word.

From February 19 to 21, on the external electronic light board of the National Library of Belarus, you can see festive graphics with famous poems, quotes from the classics of Belarusian literature about the beauty and originality of the native language.

On the occasion of the International Mother Language Day, the library will host many thematic events: book exhibitions, videos etc. dedicated to the Belarusian language.

On the eve of the International Mother Language Day, a press conference “Development and Popularization of the Modern Belarusian Language” was held in Minsk, during which linguists spoke about the creation of a new fundamental Explanatory Dictionary of the Belarusian language in 15 volumes, the first volume of which should be published in the next perspective.
