On the Belarusian Written Language Day — 2018

September 2, 2018, will mark the 25th anniversary of the Belarusian Written Language Day, which is celebrated in our country every year on the first Sunday of September. This year, the Belarusian Written Language Day to be held in the context of the theme “My small motherland” in the city of Ivanovo, Brest Region.

Traditionally, the festival is held in the cities — centers of education, culture and publishing, places with a rich historical heritage, associated with life and work of prominent Belarusian figures from different times.

For the first time in 1994 the festival was held in Polatsk. Turov (twice), Navagrudak, Niasvizh, Orsha, Pinsk, Polatsk (total — three times), Zaslavl (twice), Mstislavl, Mir, Kamyanets, Pastavy, Shklov, Barisaw, Smargon, Khoiniki, Gantsavichi, Gluybokae, Byhaw , Szczuczyn, Ragachow were its capital in the past.

This year on September 2 on the main stage of the festival in the central park  there will be held the solemn opening and closing ceremonies, celebration ceremony of the “National Literary Prize; holiday guests — Belarusian performers – are making the speech.

Simultaneously holiday trade will be deployed in the surrounding streets. Books and media festival, playground of folk artists, painters, children's camps, expositions of museums and libraries will be deployed in the surrounding streets as well. During the whole day there will be performances of creative youth associations, the presentation of Belarusian publishing houses, including book projects, which will be dedicated to the anniversaries of literature classics: Vincent Dunin-Marcinkiewicz (1808-1884), Yanka Maur (1883-1971), Canstancyi Buylo (1893-1986); Maxima Haretski (1893-1938), Sergei Grakhowski (1913-2002), Edzi Agniatsvet (1913-2000), Aliaxander Bachyla (1918-1983), Mikalay Tkachow (1918-1979) and others.

Among the main activities of the Belarusian Written Language Day:

 — “round table” with participation of foreign poets and writers, sponsored by the Ministry of Information, the public association “Belarusian Union of Writers”, publishing house  “Zviazda ”, publishing house “Mastatskaya litaratura”;

 — Scientific-practical conference involving representatives of the National Academy of Sciences and other scientific institutions of our country;

 — awarding the winners of the art contest for young readers “Live Classics”, aimed at raising the interest of children and teenagers to the reading, education of the younger generation on the best examples of the national literature, search and support of talented youth. The founders of the contest are the Ministry of Information, Ministry of Education, JSC “Stalichnae TV”, “Union of Writers of Belarus”.

A traditional integral part of the Belarusian Written Language Day is a republican scientific and educational expedition “Road to Holy Thing” with the Holy Fire from the Holy Sepulcher, which will be attended by representatives of creative and scientific intellects and clergy. Expedition passes through the cities and villages of several regions of the country and ends its way in the capital of the holiday.

Every year the Belarusian Written Language Day is attended by the senior officials of the Republic of Belarus, heads of ministries, literary figures, representatives of culture, science, art, journalists, representatives of the embassies accredited in the Republic of Belarus, foreign delegations.

During its existence, the Belarusian Written Language Day has become a truly national holiday, a significant event in the cultural life of the country. Festive events take place not only in the capital city, but also throughout the country. These are themed lessons, lectures, seminars, meetings with scientists, writers, artists and educators.
