On the promotion of the Belarus’ initiative in the International Telecommunication Union

26.04.2018

On April 25, 2018 in Geneva, at the headquarters of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the ITU Council decided to upgrade the Area Office of ITU in the CIS region and Georgia to the ITU Regional Office for CIS.

The initiative to upgrade the office was put forward by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus Mr Andrei Kobyakov at a meeting with the ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao during the Secretary General’s visit to Belarus in April 2017. Until recently, the CIS region remained the only one in which there was no regional office of the Union.

The process of upgrading the office is planned to be completed by 2019. Increasing the status of the office, among other, implies raising the level of financing office’s operational activities in terms of implementing technical assistance projects in the countries of the region, including in Belarus. Thus, under the auspices of the ITU in 2016 – 2017, the project of the Ministry of Communications and Informatization of Belarus on creation of two Centers for Information and Communication Technologies Education for Persons with Disabilities has been implemented. The Centers have been created at the premises of the Belarusian Academy of Communications in Minsk and Vitebsk.
