Belarus calls on OHCHR to respond to human rights situation in Western countries

14.09.2021

On September 14, 2021 the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus Yury Ambrazevich took part in the general debate with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights during the 48th session of the UN Human Rights Council that opened at the UN office in Geneva.

The Belarusian diplomat criticized the work of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in assessing the situation of human rights in the world, emphasizing its lack of response to developments in Western countries. In this context, he drew the Council’s attention to the crackdown on peaceful protesters in Greece, Germany, France against anti-COVID discriminatory measures and the ruthless treatment of migrants by authorities of Latvia, Lithuania and Poland.

Yuri Ambrazevich advocated the need for serious adjustments in the work of the OHCHR, in particular in increasing the monitoring of human rights violations in the EU countries, USA, Canada, UK, in order to ensure impartiality of the Office and equal attention of the UN to human rights issues in any states, regardless of their level of development and political system.
